Everything You Need to Know About Montracon Curtainsider Trailers

4.2M side

Curtainsiders are one of the most widely used trailer types on UK roads, and for good reason. They are versatile, practical and suited to a huge range of haulage applications.

At Montracon, we have been building Curtainsider trailers for more than 49 years, and our range has grown to cover almost every way an operator may need to use one.

Here is a full rundown of what we offer, what makes our Curtainsiders worth considering and how to find the right one for your operation.

What Is a Curtainsider Trailer?

A Curtainsider, sometimes called a tautliner or curtain-sided trailer, is a semi-trailer built on a flat-deck chassis with a rigid framework and retractable curtains along both sides.

Pull the curtains back and you have side access for loading and unloading, alongside the option of rear-door access too.

It is this flexibility that makes Curtainsiders so popular. Forklifts can work from either side of the trailer, there is no need to reverse up to a fixed loading point, and cargo remains protected from wind and rain throughout the journey.

For general haulage, multi-drop distribution and everything in between, it is a hard combination to argue with.

The Montracon Curtainsider Range

Whatever the application, there is a Montracon Curtainsider built for it. Here is what is in the range:

Posted Curtainsiders

A solid, straightforward build for general haulage work. The Posted Curtainsider is still one of the most common configurations and a reliable workhorse for operators running regular freight routes.

Available in both EN12642-XL and non-EN12642-XL variants.

Postless Curtainsiders

With the centre posts removed entirely, the Postless Curtainsider gives you completely clear, unobstructed side access.

Also available in EN12642-XL, this Curtainsider is growing in popularity. If loading speed matters and you need forklifts to get in and out quickly from either side, it is worth serious consideration.

Double Deck Trailers

Built on a step-frame chassis to maximise load volume without increasing the trailer’s footprint on the road.

Double Deck Curtainsiders are particularly well suited to operations carrying high volumes of lighter freight, where getting more on each run can make a direct difference to costs. They are ideally suited to pallet network operations.

Montracon Double Deck Curtainsiders are fitted as standard with rear wrap-around curtains for unhindered side-loading access.

Urban Trailers

Designed with tighter turning circles and improved manoeuvrability for operators working city and town-centre routes, where space is limited and every metre counts.

LST Trailers

A lightweight specification for operators who need to carry as much payload as possible within legal weight restrictions.

If you are constantly working close to weight limits, LST is where to start.

Euroliner Trailers

Built to European pallet and load dimensions, the Euroliner is the natural choice for operators running cross-border or international routes.

All models across the range are available on either tandem or triaxle bogies. They can also be specified with a fuel-friendly canted roofline and side skirts to reduce drag and improve fuel economy on longer runs.

Why Bolted Construction Matters

All Montracon Curtainsiders use bolted construction rather than welded construction.

It is a detail that is easy to overlook at the point of purchase, but it can make a real difference over the life of the trailer.

If a Curtainsider gets knocked or damaged on the job, bolted panels can be quicker and more straightforward to repair than welded alternatives. That can mean less time off the road, lower repair costs and a trailer that keeps earning its keep for longer.

Combined with our five-year chassis and body warranty, it is a package that holds up well against anything else on the market.

EN12642-XL Accreditation

All Montracon Curtainsiders can be specified with full EN12642-XL accreditation, providing certified load restraint and giving operators confidence in both load security and regulatory compliance.

For anyone carrying freight where load security is a specific requirement, this is an important option worth including in the specification.
